WomenCan, an innovative platform dedicated to women’s empowerment, successfully hosted its Wellness Collective Summit on August 5. This annual event aims to equip women with valuable tools, information, and resources for holistic wellness.

Hundreds of women and men gathered at Pere House for the summit, which also focused on expanding collaboration opportunities and building a community of like-minded professionals from various sectors, including industry, government, and private enterprises.

The summit featured health and wellness experts, industry leaders, and innovators who discussed the latest trends, insights, and challenges within the healthcare and wellness sector. They also explored the best approaches to shape the future of the industry.

Tumi Mthembu, the founder of WomenCan, stated, “At WomenCan, we believe that a woman’s well-being is the cornerstone of a thriving world. Through these platforms, we aim to embrace and reimagine wellness by collaborating with government, industry experts, and health professionals. We emphasise the need for innovative holistic wellness and harm reduction approaches, all supported by scientifically based guidance.”

Dr Bandile Masuku, an alternate member of the Health and Wellness Portfolio and the chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Community Safety, delivered the keynote address on behalf of ANC treasurer-general Dr Gwen Ramokgopa.

“As we celebrate this special Women’s Month, it is timely and essential to highlight the health and well-being of women—not just in theory, but through practical interventions,” said Masuku, reading Dr Ramokopa’s speech.

“We need examples, policies, and programmes that address the root causes of illness, inequality, and disempowerment. Wellness is more than the absence of disease; it is about proactively empowering women and enabling individuals to take control of their health through conscious lifetime choices. This approach allows us to prevent, treat, and even reverse many chronic diseases through better nutrition, regular physical activity, stress management, self-care, and, importantly, harm reduction strategies.”

Following the keynote address, there were panel discussions featuring industry leaders and experts who focused on the future of health, navigating trust in business, holistic wellness approaches, and healthcare policies and regulations.
